The twelve houses, properly
Each bhava, what it genuinely covers, and the derived meanings that let one house answer several questions.
Houses are the part of a chart that answers "about what". A planet tells you the quality of an energy; the house tells you where in life it lands.
The twelve, in one line each
- 1st (Tanu) — the body, the self, how you arrive in a room. The whole chart is read from here.
- 2nd (Dhana) — earned wealth, speech, the family you came from, food.
- 3rd (Sahaja) — siblings, courage, short journeys, skill of hand, communication.
- 4th (Bandhu) — home, mother, land, and inner peace.
- 5th (Putra) — children, creativity, intelligence, and the merit you arrived with.
- 6th (Shatru) — debt, disease, enemies, competition, and daily work.
- 7th (Kalatra) — marriage, business partnership, contracts, the other person.
- 8th (Ayur) — transformation, inheritance, secrets, longevity, the occult.
- 9th (Dharma) — fortune, father, teachers, long journeys, belief.
- 10th (Karma) — career, status, action in the world, the public record.
- 11th (Labha) — gains, networks, elder siblings, fulfilled desire.
- 12th (Moksha) — release, foreign lands, expenditure, sleep, liberation.
Derived meanings — where the real work happens
A house can be counted from any other house, and this is what lets one chart answer questions it has no dedicated house for.
Your mother is the 4th. Her career is the 10th from the 4th — which is the 1st. Your spouse is the 7th; your spouse’s sibling is the 3rd from the 7th, which is the 9th. Your child’s marriage is the 7th from the 5th, which is the 11th.
This is also where beginners go wrong. Deriving a house is easy; knowing when the derived meaning is strong enough to read is the skill, and it comes from checking derived readings against things you can verify.
The classifications that matter
Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the houses of action and visible life. Trikonas (1, 5, 9) are the houses of merit and fortune. A planet linking a kendra to a trikona is the classical signature of rise — a Raja Yoga.
Dusthanas (6, 8, 12) are the difficult houses. They are also the houses of transformation, research and release, which is why the charts of surgeons, researchers and renunciates tend to be busy there. "Difficult" is not "bad"; it means the results arrive through friction.
